Privacy Policy โ OpenBook
Last updated: August 31, 2026
OpenBook is a browser new tab extension that helps you visualize and organize your local browser bookmarks. This extension runs on your device only. We do not operate servers, user accounts, analytics, or tracking.
1. Data the extension accesses
Browser bookmarks (read-only)
When you open a new tab or use Sync, OpenBook reads bookmark titles and URLs from your browser to display and categorize them inside the extension. OpenBook does not create, edit, or delete entries in your browser's native bookmark library. Bookmark data is not uploaded to us or any third party.
Local storage (chrome.storage.local)
The following data is stored on your device only:
- Auto-classification assignments
- Custom groups and card layout
- Pinned bookmarks and sort order
- Privacy group settings (PIN is stored as a hash, not plain text)
- User preferences such as card colors
Favicons
The extension uses the browser's built-in favicon API to show site icons next to bookmarks. Bookmark URLs are not sent to third parties for this purpose in the extension environment.
2. Network requests
OpenBook makes one optional external request:
- Hitokoto API (https://v1.hitokoto.cn/) โ fetches a random quote (JSON text) shown in the header. No bookmarks, personal information, browsing history, or identifiers are sent with this request.
If the request fails, the extension continues to work normally. OpenBook does not load or execute remote JavaScript or other remote code.
3. Data we do not collect
- Personal identity information
- Browsing history beyond your saved bookmarks
- Analytics or usage telemetry
- Payment or account data
4. Data deletion
You can remove all extension data at any time by:
- Using Clear layout in the extension, or
- Uninstalling the extension, or
- Clearing extension data in your browser settings
Removing extension data does not change your browser's native bookmarks.
5. Children's privacy
OpenBook is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information.
6. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when the extension changes. The "Last updated" date above will be revised accordingly.
